Question

Can't start MySQL server

Yesterday I successfully installed MySQL 5 on my machine. Today I installed MySQL 3.51 ODBC Driver, reebooted my machine, and now I can't restart MySQL. When I try I get the error message

"ERROR 2003 (HY000):  Can't connect to MySQL server on 'localhost' (10061)"

Any ideas? Thanks.

I found this elsewhere:

"Clearly this is a networking-level error and not a MySQL authentication error.

The simple answer was to comment out the "bind-address" line in the global "my.cnf". "

 - might be helpful.

I managed to restart it by MySWL Server Instance Config Wizard. However, I wonder if there's an easier way.

did you install it as a service?

check to see if its running...

look to see if you have a tcp port open on 3306 (the default port)

what OS?

I am not sure what it means to "install it as a service". It doesn't run until I start the configuration wizard and reconfigure it from there. I am using Windows XP Professional.

Start --> run --> 'services.msc'

if you see mysql in the list, it is installed as a service.

from the configuration wizard, it will ask you if you want to start at boot time or start as a service [something to that effect]
