Having problems odering date and time columns in MySQL

Hi,

I am trying to order my results in date and then time format in a descending order.

when I run the following command:

SELECT * FROM wslogs WHERE wslog_username='hedley' ORDER BY wslog_date DESC, wslog_time DESC;

the wslog_time column will not order the time correctly, see code snippet.

The 16:47 is after 9.19 (because it is seeing the time as a string I assume).

My wslog_time data type is VARCHAR(45) which I know 'now' is wrong (go easy on me I am a MySQL newbie). But I can't seem to alter it to TIME as it gives me an error:

Incorrect time value: '23.58.02' for column  'wslog_time' at row blah

I have had a play around with ORDER BY CAST but this just gives me errors which I didn't understand, but can reproduce if required.

What is my best and most proper course of action? The time is provided by another system so will always be in this format.
