Find next record coming up based on date

I have a list of records with a date column. I need to get the most recent and next record coming up based on the current date.

most recent:
select * from tbl where id='xxxxx' and mydateir<=curdate() order by mydate desc limit 1;

next upcoming:
select * from tbl where id='xxxxx' and mydate>=curdate() limit 1;

This works most of the time, but there are some records where the date only has a year (ie: 2008-00-00) or only has a year/month (2008-07-00). If it's still this year and the month listed hasn't past or isn't present then we assume it's still upcoming.

example:
2008-03-14
2008-05-00 - most recent (May past)
2008-06-00 - next upcoming (still June)
2008-00-00 - upcoming (still 2008)
2009-11-24

the queries above will output 2008-06-00 for most recent and 2009-11-24 for next upcoming instead of 2008-05-00 and 2008-06-00. any ideas?Start Free Trial
