Help with Get function and data in URL string

I have the following code, that does not work.

$type = $_GET['type'];

$SQL = "INSERT into ".$mysql_pretext."_users (type, username, password) VALUES ('$type','$username','$password')";
mysql_query ($SQL) or die(mysql_error());

I have a url www.someurl.com/page.php?type=user

When I change $type = $_GET['type']; to $type = user;
then the word user is uploaded into the database

I tried using '".$type."' in place of type in the mysql query but it did not work

Any suggestions on how to get this to work, or a work around?

I have tried everything I can think of.

one note, <?php echo"$type" ?> does not echo, but if I change to
<?php $type = $_GET['type']; echo"$type"?>
then the word user echos (when I use $type = $_GET['type'];)
