Question

Restore .BAK file

Asked by: ClassyLinks

Hello.

I have a .BAK file sent to me by my webhost.  I do not have a local copy of the database and only have Enterprise Manager on my computer here.

The server I'm attempting to restore the database to is not the same as the original one.  Not the same database name either.

So, I need to create a local database and extract the information on to it before I can use DTS to move the tables I need to the new server.

Can you help???

This is pretty urgent.  My site is down until I get it done.

Thanks!

When you say enterprise manager.. i suppose you are using sql server 2000...

follow the steps below to restore the the database using enterprise manager...

1.Login to the SQL server,
2.choose and run Enterprise Manager.
Select the database onto which you would like to restore the data,
3.right click on the database,
select 'Restore database' from under the 'All tasks' menu.
4.Under the 'General' tab, select 'From Device'.
5.From under the 'parameters' section, click 'select device'.
7.From the dialog box that appears, select 'add'. Browse to the .BAK file using the option under 'File'.
8.Select 'OK' across all sub options and finally the main dialog box to perform the restore operation .

OK.  First, I had to be able to create a database.  I downloaded SQL Server Management Studio Express.
I now have a local copy of the database, but cannot see it in my Enterprise Manager....I'm not sure what SQL Server I need to register to get it to appear locally.

Any ideas??

Just to add...when I try to connect to the database I get a message saying "you must use SQL Server 2005 tools to connect"

by: JagdishDevakuPosted on 2009-08-17 at 09:22:50ID: 25115953

I think your database belongs to SQL Server 2005....

So You can not connect with SQL Server 2005 and higher version using Enterprise Manager. You will need SQL Server Management Studio available with SQL Server 2005 and higher version.

OK...tool is downloaded, and it looks like I can see the server, but running the DTS script does not give me any options to import tables/data.
