MySQL Insert Values, Get Identity, Insert Into Another Table with Some Other Values

I have an insert query or rather a few hundred of them (one below) that insert values into one table called links. I need to get the identity of the inserted value for each record and then insert it into another table along with the link_category value from the insert query.

So, it would be something like:

1. Insert values
2. Get identity
3. Insert identity and other values from previous insert into new table
4. Loop to next insert

INSERT INTO `mydatabase`.`links` (link_category, link_name, link_url) VALUES ("70","Test Link","http://www.test.com");

    VALUES(NULL,'text');         # generate ID by inserting NULL
INSERT INTO foo2 (id,text)
    VALUES(LAST_INSERT_ID(),'text');  # use ID in second table

Close. I need to grab the value of 'text' and insert that value which could be a hundred different values. I don't want to have to write out the value of 'text' in the second insert. That make sense?

A combination of both worked so I'll split the points between you two.

@nemws1 you left out the "VALUES ()" part of the query.

Anyways here's what worked for me...

INSERT INTO foo (auto,text)
    VALUES(NULL,'text')
;
INSERT INTO foo2
    VALUES (id, text)
    SELECT id, text
    FROM foo
    WHERE id = LAST_INSERT_ID()
;

3:
4:

8:
9:

Ah - I assumed foo2 only contained two fields.  I generally think using named fields in an INSERT is a *bad* idea, since it lets you skip values - I'll usually do something like this if I want to do that:

Not as portable, but (to me) its clearer what's going on. ;-)

INSERT INTO foo2
    SELECT id, NULL, text, NULL, NULL
    FROM foo
    WHERE id = LAST_INSERT_ID()
;

4:
