Asked by: ruffone

I changed the name of an XP box with sql server 2008 Express running on it. I am able to commect to the server with Sql Managemant Studio just fine but whenever I try to do anything like attach a database I get the error "User does not have permission to perform this action". I tried these but I get the same error. Could anyone shead some light as to why I might be getting this error

Hi ruffone,

Can you login using the sa account?

Gary

by: ruffonePosted on 2009-09-20 at 23:55:51ID: 25380674

I treed connecting with sa and no password since I didn't set one and I also tried connecting with sa and the administrator password and was not able to connect with either way. I am able to connect to the server with management studio but that is about all I could do.  The old [machineName\Administrator] account is under "Security>Login" but not the new [machineName\Administrator]. When I try to create it it tells me that it is already there. This all started when I changed the name of the machine

Thanks for your response

Try using Dedicated Administrator Connection (DAC) Mode
Provide . in Server Name and Select Windows Credentials in your Login Screen.

This will login to your server through DAC mode.

1. Reset your sa credentials using this connection.
2. Enable Mixed Mode Authentication is you dont have.
3. Provide db_owner credentials to some user.

Login using that user and now you should be able to successfully restore..

If you are logged in through DAC Mode, then you should not be able to do everything in the server

How do I enable Mixed Mode? I see a setting in Sql Server Express 2008 for remote connections but not one for mixed mode

I am connecting the way you suggest. Are you saying that after I connect in DAC Mode and make the changes 1 - 3 I should then logout and log back in as the DBOwner and continue with the changes? The problem with that is that I have being trying to do that all night with no success

This should help you to enable Mixed Mode Authentication

http://www.hosting.com/support/vps/windows/mixedmode/

If you enable Mixed Mode Authentication, then using sa credentials log into your server.
You should be able to restore using sa credentials..

I am trying to attach the databases but they are being attached as "read only" I found some articles but I am not sure what I am to do.  The account that it is running as I think is "NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE" anything else and the server refuses to start

Ok.. You would be having one user like

Computer_name\SQLServer2005MSSQLUser$Computer_name$SQLServicename

Right click C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server or the folder containing SQL Server Installation
and then add this user in Security tab add the user mentioned above granting full rights to this user.

This should solve most of the problems..
Also check whether SQL Server Service runs with some Domain account privileges instead of Local System or a user with restricted domain privileges.

Thanks rrjegan17, I applied that account to the folder that housed the DB I was trying to attach and then I was able to update the read only status of the attached DB

Right Click database -> properties -> options

State -> database read only -> false
