I am developing a site. It has a MYSQL backend and is developed using PHP. The site contains a forum. Is it better to keep the forum in a separate database then the rest of the site or is there no benefit to it?

I would keep them separate as you are more likely to want to modify the table structure for your site than you are the forums (in the future). It may make it easier to work with.

>>Not a dedicated server. I plan for the site to grow quite large. There will be other things in the database that will be queried often. Articles, blog post, user info.....etc. At the moment I am only using one server for the design. I am just looking toward the future and want to preplan.
If that is the case then you can go ahead with different databases for the different purpose concept which is in other words "functional partition of schemas".

No difference in performance for a single DB or multiple DB.
And also, NO harm if you keep the forums schema and site schema under same DB or keep it on different DB. The only problem would come is when writing a query that need to pull data from Forums schema and join with other site schema - i.e you have to prefix the schema name with the table names.
