No difference in performance for a single DB or multiple DB.
And also, NO harm if you keep the forums schema and site schema under same DB or keep it on different DB. The only problem would come is when writing a query that need to pull data from Forums schema and join with other site schema - i.e you have to prefix the schema name with the table names.
