Question

Creating a sign up form and login

Asked by: royhunters

I have a project where I need to create a sign up form to collect user data, email, etc. this will be a sign up sheet for a visitor to be able to view MLS lisings on a realtor website. Once the data has been collected I will need a basic login for future visits. I would like the data collected to be emailed to me via my webformmailer.php on my server as this info will be saved as a possible sales lead.

I need to be able to collect a username, password, first and last name and an email address.

I would like the ability to have an auto reply email with a link to validate the signup like you see in so many forums... but I dont want to push my luck here. I know you are busy people and I dont want to ask too much... But I would really like to learn how to do this.

I use Godaddy for hosting, I am set up on a Linux server with MySQL db's

I am fairly proficient with Html and CSS... but just with creating typical link and display web pages so I will need some easy instructions as to how to set this up.

I have searched the internet but I can not seem to find a solution that fits my situation. I am looking for some plug and play code, something secure, not just a html and JS solution... And a quick step by step for setting it all up.

Help would be appreciated. Thanks

The Godaddy link is for their email marketing service, the opt form for a newsletter. I have read the forum post you linked to however it states there is a link to download the sample PHP for the forms but that link does not seem to be available. So at the moment I am still where I started, confused.

Thanks for the reply

Here is a link to an excellent book that describes all about how to build the register / login logic.
http://www.sitepoint.com/books/phpmysql4/

I have owned that particular SitePoint book since version One and find it to be very useful both as a tutorial and a reference.  A good investment, for sure.

But to a finer point - this login concept has been done to death and there is no reason for you to have to reinvent anything.  You might want to consider using one of the CMS systems such as Wordpress, Joomla or Drupal as a platform for your application development, or choose a framework like Zend.  The CMS and frameworks already have all of this functionality baked in and ready to use.  A great time saver, believe me!

Another option to consider - OpenID.  http://openid.net/

best regards, ~Ray

I like the book idea and plan to get it thanks for the tip, the open ID just seems so easy... I just do not like the idea of third party stuff running on my sites...

To be honest, I am a bit old school and I have not really looked into any of those CMS systems you mentioned so i dont know much about them... To me, wordpress is just a blog and it would not work for the sites I do.

I think I need the book before getting scriptcase.. I tend to stay away from these applications that do the code for you... I have not found any yet really woth it... I use dreamweaver in split view and find myself never typing in the view screen or using any of the functions... the CSS wizard makes me mental so I am doing all my own CSS by hand as well...I tried the form stuff with dreamweaver once, the form validation didn't work so I have not touched it since.....

I was hoping for a quick fix for this one site just to get it done... One great premade PHP I can just plant a bunch of styling around that is easy to configure and has a lot of options, everything I have found seems pretty light weight, or extremely unsecure... I would think there is a great PHP login script somewhere someone is sharing... I just cant seem to find it.

I'll hold out just a little longer befor closing this out and awarding points...

Thanks guys for your replies!

IIRC, all the Sitepoint books come with access to a code library, so you can copy the example code used in the book right off their web site.  Don't have my copy of the "Build Your Own..." handy right now, but I think that's the case.  The link on their web site seems to indicate that it is available:

Wow, a bad grade in response to a nearly perfect set of suggestions.

I am sorry that someone has not premanufactured a solution for you ("One great premade PHP I can just plant" ... "a great PHP login script somewhere") but the fact of the matter is that you, as a developer, bear some responsibility for your own customization of the code.  In fact, you wrote, "I just do not like the idea of third party stuff running on my sites..."  What are we to make of those statements?  It almost sounds like, "I want broccoli but not if it is a vegetable!"

How would you envision that someone would know your variable names and data base fields?  The only way I can think of that you might find that pre-configuration is in the CMS and frameworks.  That is why they were suggested here.
