Facebook Like Notification System

I am looking to build or use an existing notification system similar to Facebook. I am trying to notify my employees when they get a new customer or when something needs to happen. I am looking to expand the capabilities in the future. I have figured out how to do the facebook bar but I have no clue how to do the notification system or the chat system.

Any Ideas?
