The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

INSERT 1 VALUE from a SELECT while the other VALUEs are hard-coded

Asked by biglarrrr in Oracle 10.x, Oracle Database

I'm trying to insert a new row into a table but I'm having a problem with it.

Here are the columns for the table:
Table Name = MEMBERDESC
MEMBER_ID   NUMBER NOT NULL,
MESSAGE_1   VARCHAR2(1000 BYTE),
MESSAGE_2   VARCHAR2(1000 BYTE),
MESSAGE_3   VARCHAR2(1000 BYTE),
MESSAGE_4   VARCHAR2(1000 BYTE),
PRIORITY    INTEGER,
LANGUAGE_ID INTEGER NOT NULL

This is the insert I have:

INSERT INTO MEMBERDESC (
MEMBER_ID, MESSAGE_1, MESSAGE_2, MESSAGE_3, MESSAGE_4, PRIORITY, LANGUAGE_ID )
VALUES ( select member_id from member where membername = ''GROUP1''), 'Test1', 'Test2', 'Test3', '', 8, -1);

Of course that INSERT isn't working. My problem is that I can't figure out insert the MEMBER_ID by pull the MEMBER_ID from the MEMBER table as well as inserting the other values at the same time.

The reason why I need to select the MEMBER_ID is because that MEMBER_ID value will change in our different test environments. Also, the MEMBER_ID shows up as 8.0000E+18 in SQL*Plus.

Hopefully someone can help.

Thanks,
