Installing Dataguard

Please give me a quick guide what steps I need to configure Dataguard.

There is an existing database and I need to configure a new node as standby.

For instance:
What are my first steps?
What do I need to do on the existing database?
Do I need to use Grid Control?
Do I need Broker?

Any other bullet points would be highly appreciated.

This is on Solaris 10

See if you can enter this oracle link.  If not sign for free in Oracle Technology.
If you don't find Oracle Technology to access the documentation go to oracle.com and in the left windows click Oracle Technology.

The when entering Oracle Technology, choose Documentation - Database and choose 10.2  Then left columns and choose HA (High Availability and choose Data Guard.

Linda,

I have that documentation. I am hoping to hear from someone who has personal notes who can give quickstart guide.
I configured DataGuard on 9i across 2 sites about 3yrs ago and it is still in use today. I haven't done it on 10g and that's why I asked the specific questions above.

For instance on 10g you have to install Grid Control separately whereas on 9i it was simpler. Hence why one of my questions is do I have to have Grid Control? If I don't use Grid Control, how difficult would it be?

First:  I don't know if you have to install OMS in order to use Data guard, but installing OEm10g I installed it in the following way:

Follow note #412431.1 in order to know what version of the agent you will need to install in the different Oracle Database versions 9.2. 0.4  and up in the different servers you will be monitoring and also to know the Oms version vs. the Repository ORacle Database Server version.

We use Oracle version 10.2 for the Oms and for the Oracle Database Server - Enterprise Edition in two Windows Servers - 32 bit.  One for the App and the other one for the Databas Server.  

So you will have two cd's dvd's one for the app and the other one for the database server - enterprise edition for the repository.
Both servers have 3gb memory ram but we will buy 3gb more for each server.
After installing more than 3gb in Windows you will have to modify the boot.ini  to be able to use that additional memory because the architecture of Windows 32 bit.

Thanks LindaC for your time in attempting to answer my questions. However, I don;t think you're answering my questions.

I am not installing on 9i. I want to install on 10gR2.
I am NOT installing on Windows. I am installing on Solaris.

Please go through my first post and see if you can help.

no, you do not "need" grid control.

you can use 10g like 9i.


with the extra tools and new version can you do other things, like monitor/maintain through the grid control, but it's not necessary to make it work.

Have you implemented it? How did you do it? I did in in 9i through EM and it was farily OK. Now I have to do it 10g and I don't know where to start.

Do you have quick steps? I'll appreciate it.

I will read the notes but I just want assurance that I'm on the right path.

I haven't got the answer I am loking for. Has anyone implemented DataGuard manually or with OEM? I have now successfully implemented it using Grid Control and it was OK bar minor glitches.

Has anyone done it manually? I'll like to know this just in case a client does not have or intend to have Grid Control.
