Archiver Hung

Our database is running and have error and i check the alert log :
"~ORA-16038: log 5 sequence# 5160 cannot be archived~ORA-19504: failed to create file ""~ORA-00312: online log 5 thread 1: '/ora_data/way4/redo05.log'~ORA-00312: online log 5 thread 1: '/ora_data/way4/redo05.lo2'"

This is the first time , my database have this error . I understand that , archive cannot create by redo log
(My space for archive log is free )
Why does this happen ? What is the reason for error ? What should i do with online log 5 now ?
How do i prevent it for next time .
When the error happens , i did stop instance and shutdown database .and it works nomrally now.
If i meet this error, which command do i use for fixing it .
