The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Oracle 10g installation fails with Java crash

Asked by MDrabicky in Oracle 10.x

I am trying to install Oracle 10g on Windows 2003 Server R2 fully patched thru August 2008. The x64 system is a VM running under ESX V3.5, has 2 AMD CPUs and 3 GB of memory allocated to it along with 20 GB for the C: drive and 50 GB for the E: drive, the latter being for the database itself.

When I try to install, the setup program runs, puts up the initial screen, I deselect the sample database then say go. It gets to about 10% done on the progress bar then just disappears. I recopied down the installation kit (10.2.0) again just to be sure; it failed in the same way. I thought perhaps it was something pertinent to 10g so I copied down the 11g Kit (11.1.0) and tried it but got the same result: installer runs to about 10% completion then just dies.

While the installer itself doesn't say anything about why it failed, there is a Java crash. See the attached file for details.

I've tried to Google this error as well as search the Oracle FAQ and troubleshooting database. Nothing in particular stood out from all those searches.

Since the Win2003 R2 Server is running as a VM, that may have something to do with it. The host systems are 8-CPU AMD x64 servers from HP, 32 GB memory, lots and lots of SAN disk space (into the TB level). We've run hundreds of VMs based on the template used for this Oracle VM; they all work okay. Even so, since others have been successful using these kits to install Oracle, I have to assume it's something about this environment that has the installer ticked off.

I did have the current version of Java installed (JRE 6 update 7). I removed it, rebooted, tried the install again but it failed the same way. So much for a multiple Java conflict.

Any thoughts, ideas, or suggestions on how to fix this issue would be most appreciated.
