Oracle 11g: ORA-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor

Hello Experts,

I am having problems with my listener. It does not know the service name; but I do see it and need it.
I am configuring it (and reconfiguring it) via ./netca and/or ./netmgr.... I keep getting the same error.
The listener is running.
Below are my listener.ora, sqlnet.ora, and tnsnames.ora

Do you see any config issues? why would I get ORA-12514?

I believe you problem is in your listener.ora file.

You need to change the DONNA = line to LISTENER_DONNA =.

Then shut down the listener and start it with lsnrctl start donna.

This will create a listener with that name.

My suggestion would be to remove the listener.ora file (or just rename it out of the way). Then restart the listener. This will let automatic registration take over

I tried renaming to LISTENER_DONNA and restarting the listener but got first error below.
then, I tried removing listener.ora; but got second error below...

Weird... I am not sure what's happening...
any other thoughts? anything will help...

My fault. I found another example of mine. In the listener.ora file, it shouldn't be LISTENER_DONNA, it should be DONNA as in your original. I don't know why I thought it prepended LISTENER to it.

When you start the listener, you need to user "start DONNA", not just the start command.

As I said earlier, I believe that automatic instance registration is better in most cases.

I have been troubleshooting this for hours now... I tried to do the automatic registration by stopping all listeners, renaming listener.ora and starting the listener again.. but, it didn't work. I am still getting the same TNS error... I need the services to be up along with the listener.
Here are my newly configured listener.ora, sqlnet.ora, and tnsnames.ora...

any thoughts are greatly appreciated...

Automatic instance registration is not immediate if you bring up the database before the listener. It takes a couple of minutes for the instance to register. If you bring up the listener before the database, it will be immediate.

Why do you need to have non-default names for your listener?

Also, remove the CONNECT_DATA from the listener specification, there is not connect information for a listener.

the db has been down. I've been trying to bring up the listener before the db.....

to be honest, I don't need a non-default name for the listener. I just need the darn thing to work. I need a listener and a service name up and running...

I will remove the CONNECT_DATA from the listener...

do you see anything out of place in the config files?

Then to simplify it, you should have LISTENER in place of JOSE in the 2 lines of your listener.ora file. Then you can use the default commands to start your listener.
