Question

How to start Oracle Service manually (and Listener) in Oracle 8i

Asked by: Perherman

I have a problem that a computer´s OracleServiceORCL will not start. Neither the OracleOraHome81Listener.

This happened when the computers hard disk was starting to get full, and the network consultant moved the Windows Swap file (virtual memory file) to a new location (other hard drive).

How to I try to start the Oracle service manually? A cannot do it from the ORacle DBA Studio, since it cannot access the database.

check in windows services if the tasks are running.
you can start/restart them manually there.

Check that user starting service has correct rights to the Oracle Software.
It has to belong to OraInstall or DBA group oand to be Administrator of the OS
on the server machine.

You are having problems starting an Oracle instance from WINDOWS.  I will show you how to stop everything and then restart it.  I assume the space issue on the disk drive is solved.  I assume the oracle software was installed only once in this machine.

Log into your machine as the user that installed the Oracle database software.  Open a DOS prompt window and enter the following commands.

-- Start of commands
REM: Cleaning up.  Stopping the database if still on.  Do not worry about Error messages.

NET STOP OracleOraHome81Listener
ORADIM -SHUTDOWN -SID ORCL

REM:  Restarting the Database. Send me the error messages if any.

NET START OracleOraHome81Listener
ORADIM -STARTUP -SID ORCL
-- End of commands

This should work for you.  The explanation of what I am doing is too long for this forum.

The network administrator had changed the rights of the user, which previously had administrative rights, when that was changed back it now works,

It is better to delete the service using oradim and create new service.

oradim -Delete -SID <sid>

oradim -NEW -SID <sid>
