how do I design a database schema for the shift employees and normal hour employees for a company in a different locations

Dear Expert,

I request your assistance in designing a schema for the following:
A parent company is having 5 subsidary companies.
However, the employee details for the parent company and subsidiary companies is maintained in a common database in the headoffice.
However, the employees working in each companies are working in different shift timings.
say in one of the subsidary company some employees are working in morning 6:00 to 2:00 in the afternoon and so on. In other company, the employees are working in morning 8:00 to 5:00 in the evening.
I am in the process of designing a schema for the above.
Hence Kindly help me in designing the schema and the relationships.

Provide more details, some of the questions which come to my mind initially are:

  1. What is the new schema meant for? Is it created only to take care of the attendance of the shift employees? 
  2. Are these 5 subsidiary companies placed in different time zones? 
  3. Do the employees have access to the common database or to the new schema which you are going to create? 
  4. What are the operations that the shift employees can perform on the database? 
  5. What is the scope of shift timings in the schema creation? 
  6. Are you allowed to created single schema or multiple schema for the subsidiaries?

Dear Expert,

The company's head office timing is from morning 8:00 to evening 4:00
One of the subsidiary company has shift timings round the clock (6:00 to 14:00 hrs and then 14:00 hrs to 22:00 hrs and then from 22:00 hrs to 06:00 hrs.
In other subsidiary company the shift timings are different like 6:00 hrs to 12:00 hrs and then 04:00 hrs to 19:00 hrs.
The headoffice employee count is say 100
The first subsidiary employee count is say 100
The other subsidiary employee count is say 150.
I would like to have a database schema which has to take care of all the employee attendance and timesheet. This will be used for calculating the pay.

Based on your information, your scenario can be designed in various methods based on other criteria that you need to take care.

I would suggest one of the design which holds good for the given inputs:

You can use the existing database schema where the employee details are already maintained.
Create a new table "ShiftTimings" which can store the shift timings information for each subsidiary.
Store the shift start time and end time as separate columns in this table along with the Subsidiary Name (You could also use numbers to identify subsidiaries). Script which you can use is provided in the code snippet below. Note the usage of separate columns for hour and minute as they would be of help during employees attendance maintenance and its related calculations.

Another information should be stored in the database as to which subsidiary the employees belong to.
This could be done by creating a new table or by adding new columns to the existing employee table.
I have providing a script for creating a new table "Employee" in the code snippet.
In this table EmployeeID can be same as the unique key column used in your existing employee table.

If you use 3rd level normalization, which is ideal for your scenario, then the subsidiary information should be added to the exiting employee table.

With this two database tables you have the base structure ready for storing the attendence and timesheet. And calculating the pay can be implemented easily with program units, procedure/function/package. Attendence can be validated by checking the shift timings stored in the ShiftTimings table.
