The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Oracle Migration -- Help with Import

Asked by exptech in Oracle 9.x, Oracle 8.x

Tags: ,

We are trying to migrate an Oracle database from a linux server running Oracle 8 to a Windows 2003 server running Oracle 9. Unfortunately the software application, according to the vendor, is not compatible with any version of oracle above 9, so that is why we are not migrating to the newest version. That said, here is our question or problem. Not working much with oracle, we  did some research and came to the conclusion that doing an export followed by an import would most likely be the best way to perform the migration, and we started testing different ways of doing so. Since the database is somewhat complicated containing many schemas and users (which would be a nightmare to try and manually create in the new database), we did a full database export, then a full import. Everything seemed to go well, and the application so far is working, but we have one concern. When importing the data we noticed that the SYSTEM and SYS schemas were imported as well as the application's schemas, and we are not sure if this will cause future problems. Again not working much with Oracle, we are really not to sure what is stored in these schemas and if migrating them from one oracle server to another is a problem, especially since they are different versions of Oracle running on different platforms.

Does anyone think this will cause a problem ?

We are also open to any other suggestions on how to perform the migration.

Thanks in advance.
