How do i create a plsql function in oracle that deals with a boolean value?

I need to create a function that receives a parameter such as a emp_num (employee number) for example that will return a boolean value of true or false depending on whether that number exists in the database.

try this...

note, booleans are not allowed in Oracle's sql, so you won't be able to use this function in a sql query, only in other plsql calls

CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION emp_exists(p_num IN NUMBER)
    RETURN BOOLEAN
IS
    v_cnt INTEGER;
BEGIN
    -- if your employee number parameter will be unique
    -- (i.e. you will have either 0 or 1 record for a given number)

CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION empExists(pEmpno employee.emp_no%TYPE) RETURN BOOLEAN
 IS
  lDummy INTEGER; 
 BEGIN
   SELECT 1
   INTO lDummy
   FROM employee
   WHERE emp_no = pEmpNo;
 
   RETURN TRUE;
 EXCEPTION
   WHEN NO_DATA_FOUND THEN
     RETURN FALSE;

Note

 SELECT 1
   INTO lDummy
   FROM employee
   WHERE emp_no = pEmpNo;


assumes the emp_no will be unique, if it isn't you will get an error
