literal does not match format string

Hi Experts,

                I am trying to run this simple query:

                Its throwing the error shown in question title.. what am I doing wrong here?

  select count(*) from siweb_login_history where trunc(login_date) between to_date('2009-11-02') and to_date('2009-11-03')

you don't have a format specified on your to_date, so you are using some default,

try this...


 select count(*) from siweb_login_history where trunc(login_date)
between to_date('2009-11-02','yyyy-mm-dd') and to_date('2009-11-03','yyyy-mm-dd')

                    Thanks for the reply. This worked :)

                   So every time we need to run a SQL that contains a date, we have to use to_date function?

Can this query return me ID, the most recent LOGIN_DATE for every ID and the count(*) altogether?

yes, you should always use TO_DATE convert your strings to dates and always use an explicit date format mask

for your second question (should be a separate question)

try this...

SELECT id, LAST_VALUE(login_date) OVER (PARTITION BY id ORDER BY login_date), COUNT( * ) OVER ()
FROM siweb_login_history
WHERE TRUNC(login_date) BETWEEN TO_DATE('2009-11-02', 'yyyy-mm-dd')
                            AND  TO_DATE('2009-11-03', 'yyyy-mm-dd')
