The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Oracle 9i backup and restore question

Asked by mikegodwin in Oracle Product Info

I may be in way over my head here but I thought I'd ask anyway.
I have written a few VB6 front ends for my group's Oracle 9i db. I asked the question about how often the db gets backed up. I found out it hasn't been backed up for over 2 years. Since I was the one who asked about it and I can spell Oracle, I was charged with backing the system up.
The backups were no problem. I'm doing 3 kinds.

1. I set up a script to shut down the db and copy the prod db folders to another server and restart the server.
2. Full db export of the prod db.
3. Full db backup of the prod db. This creates a file with a name like B_03FKMLPO_1_1.

The question is... I want to build a new Win2K server, install Oracle on that server, and restore one of the backups (I don't care which one) to the new server to make sure we can recover from a total server failure.
From what I've been reading, this is not as easy as it should be and after about 5 books and 75 pages of RMAN commands, my little brain is getting fried. Is there an easy way to just restore the backup to another server or am I living to far in the past?

Thanks
Mike Godwin
