You are right the problem was I didn't have a tnsnames.ora file. Once I created it and put an entry for the database in it. RMAN worked. Thank You!

RMAN
When I type rman Target sys/password@oracle_sid
I get the following error:

RMAN-04005: error from target database:
ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve service name
I don't know how to resolve this error. The listener and the database are running.
