The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Need help troubleshooting database startup errors

I am trying to help a client who is unable to startup their database. I am not sure what questions to ask at this point can someone give me advice.

Here is what I know:

Their system is running on Solaris 9 Operating System
Oracle 10g
Oracle Operating System (OS) owns the Oracle binaries

The problem
Log in as Oracle OS user
when trying to connect /as sysdba get an error "insufficient privileges"

They have not had this problem in the past. I do not know what could have happened to change this. What kind of questions should I ask to figure out what the problem could be and provide a solution?

I would look at the group you are in.  By default it is the dba OS group that has the privileges to do this.

Also, check the setting of the remote_login_passwordfile parameter.

03.06.2008 at 12:53PM PST, ID: 21064650
This is the solution:

cd $ORACLE_HOME/dbs

vi init<SID>.ora

change REMOTE_LOGIN_PASSWORD=EXCLUSIVE  in this way the remote connection must connect using sys/password as sysdba.  This is better security than connecting as /as sysdba remotely.  You will still can connect /as sysdba inside the server where the database resides.

03.06.2008 at 01:39PM PST, ID: 21065061
woulldn't the connection still be using the spfile?

03.06.2008 at 07:02PM PST, ID: 21066975

Rank: Master

If you are using spfile, then you cannot edit an init.ora to set any parameters.

If you have a text copy of your spfile,  you can modify that and start up the database specifying pfile= in the startup command.

It certainly sounds like you have a password file.  If you know the password stored in it, you should be able to connect using that.  If not (depending on the setting of remote_login_password_file) deleting or recreating the password file with a new password should get you in.
Accepted Solution

03.07.2008 at 03:57AM PST, ID: 21069149
To recreate the "password file" please follow this command from the operating system:

<full ORACLE_HOME path >/bin/orapwd file=<full ORACLE_HOME path>/dbs/orapw<nSID NAME> password=<Sys password>

Late yesterday I found out that the server has bigger problems. Now they can't log into the OS. I am not sure if that means that nothing may be wrong with Oracle. Now the SA's are involved because the client is seeing a white screen.  I have to wait until the server is back up again before I can assist with the database issue.

03.07.2008 at 05:42AM PST, ID: 21069838
I will wait for you then.

03.07.2008 at 05:44AM PST, ID: 21069845
Thanks!

If there are bigger issues with the server, then there may be nothing wrong with the database.

When the server is back up, try to get in normally.  If that still fails, let us know what errors you are getting.

Possibly you have also to look in Listener.ora file and to see if there are
lines for static registration of the instance.
BTW is there only one instance on that server or more then one?

03.07.2008 at 08:17AM PST, ID: 21071620
I would have to ask about the listener once trhe server is back up. There is only 1 instance.

03.11.2008 at 07:43AM PDT, ID: 21096152
still no word. The server is on a military base in Ohio. I will keep everyone posted

03.11.2008 at 07:44AM PDT, ID: 21096167
Ok.

03.11.2008 at 08:15AM PDT, ID: 21096497

Rank: Wizard

I guess they have no entry in Listener.ora for the Oracle service.
To check if the service is registered:

% lsnrctl services

This will check which services are known to the listener.

03.11.2008 at 08:16AM PDT, ID: 21096509
Last I heard the server itself is down. They can't get it to boot up.

03.11.2008 at 12:59PM PDT, ID: 21099498
The server is back up. I asked them to type the lsnrctl services and they saw the entry for the database. However, when they try to login they keep getting the following errors:

Logging in under sysdba

ORA-01031: insufficient privileges.

And if I try to login as compu and get

Error:

ORA-01034: Oracle not available

ORA-27101: Shared memory realm does not exist

SVR4 Error: 2: no such file or directory

These are the same errors as before. I don't know what could have changed on that server because the database has worked before.

03.11.2008 at 01:07PM PDT, ID: 21099586
To recreate the "password file" please follow this command from the operating system:

<full ORACLE_HOME path >/bin/orapwd file=<full ORACLE_HOME path>/dbs/orapw<nSID NAME> password=<Sys password>

Now also on your .profile add the PATH variable as this:

PATH=<Your ORACLE_HOME >/bin:/usr/ccs/bin:/usr/bin:/etc:/usr/openwin/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin
export PATH
ORACLE_HOME=<Your ORACLE_HOME path>
export ORACLE_HOME

In the init<SID.ora> modify REMOTE_LOGIN_PASSWORDFILE=EXCLUSIVE
Assisted Solution

03.11.2008 at 01:14PM PDT, ID: 21099680
Also if you have not set the ORALCE_SID<Your SID name> then set it in the same way:

ORACLE_SID=<Your Sid name>
export ORACLE_SID

03.12.2008 at 01:02AM PDT, ID: 21103822

Rank: Wizard

They have to check again LISTENER.ORA fileand the following borreowing thing:

In ...\network\admin open listener.ora

see

SID_LIST_LISTENER =
  (SID_LIST =
    (SID_DESC =
      (SID_NAME = PLSExtProc)
      (ORACLE_HOME = D:\Ora10g)
      (PROGRAM = extproc)
    )
    (SID_DESC =
      (SID_NAME = test)
      (ORACLE_HOME = D:\Ora10g)
    )
  )

Add the entry
    (SID_DESC =
      (SID_NAME = test)
      (ORACLE_HOME = D:\Ora10g)
    )
with regard to the particular Oracle Home and SID Name.

Restart the listener:
c:>lsnrctl stop
c:>lsnctl start

AFTER THIS NECESSARY THING THEY HAVE

to check TNSNAMES.ORA file.

Possibly the Hostname (or IP) or Port has been changed.

Check also if the box has more then one NIC (Network Card), Static IP.
Do they connect to the correct HostName (or IP)?

They can make a connection string entry using NETCA and test it.

If everything is OK investigate if the DB is adjusted for automatic startup or not.
Look for /etc/oratab  file - entry 'Y' for that instance.
And dbora shell script in the startup level of the machine.

In any case try to start the instance. As Linda said check if ORACLE_SID is set (printenv command as 'oracle' user).

Start it so:
% sqlplus /nolog
SQL>connect / as sysdba
or
SQL>connect sys/<the_password>@<the tnsname_alias> as sysdba

connect to idle instance
SQL> startup

And say them that I have worked in Columbus/Ohio and send them greetings!

I had a boyfriend Pennipecker in case you know him send him greetings !

03.12.2008 at 06:04AM PDT, ID: 21105446
They sent me an email saying that they are editing the listener.ora and tnsnames.ora files. I have sent several emails and haven't gotten a response yet.

03.12.2008 at 06:07AM PDT, ID: 21105458
I called them just now and they say that after editing the listener file they were able to restart the listener. I have to wait on responses to my other emails.

03.12.2008 at 06:08AM PDT, ID: 21105469
Also if they can connect to the database, because "insuffici
