visual studio 2008 accessing oracle "System.Data.OracleClient requires Oracle client software version 8.1.7 or greater"

I am getting this error when I run an asp.net app

System.Data.OracleClient requires Oracle client software version 8.1.7 or greater

What steps do I need to take to add a reference to the oracle client in my app.

For example.  

step1 - download oracle client from www.oracle.com
step2 - etc etc Start Free Trial
