Will Oracle 9i database work on a Microsoft 2003 server.

I am moving my Oracle 9i Database from a Microsoft XP server to a Microsoft 2003 server ans was wondering if there anything special I need to do or patches I need to add to make the transistion go smoothly.

Also I cut and paste form one server to the other or should I use the exp/imp utility?

what exactly are you planning on cutting and pasting?

You could cut-n-paste all of the data files, control files, pfile/spfiles, etc. That would, in effect be the same as restoring from backup to another server. You'll likely have to do renames to tell the db where all of the files are. backup control file to trace and edit the filenames/directories and to create a new control file on the new server.

Creating a new db with the new structure you want on the new server is pretty easy to do though and then you could export and import.

Depending on the data volume the first may be more efficient. If it's just a few dozen gigabytes, I'd probably create a new db and export/import. If it's large though I'd move the datafiles.

I'm a bit confused by the Microsoft versions and terminology you mentioned. As far as I know, Microsoft never offered a "Microsoft XP server". The version of Windows server most similar to the XP desktop software was called WindowsServer2003. And yes, an Oracle9i database for Windows will run just fine on WindowsServer2003.

AFter you install the Oracle9 software on the new server, should you cut and paste the database files or should you use exp/imp? That is a good question and there are advantages and disadvantages to both options.

I like to use the exp/imp compbination whenever I move an Oracle database from server to server, because this gives me an opportunity to consolidate objects and free space, repair most "chained row" roblems, and recover the space previously used by deleted records. These actions can result in a significant performance improvement depending of course on how much fragmentation had happened in your database. The disadcantage of this approach is the database downtime time required, since it can take from 2-10 times longer than the file copy approach.

If you want to minimize the application downtime for the server move, then use the file copy approach, and simply copy all of the Oracle data (tablespace), log (on-line redo), control and init files to the new server. This assumes that the new server has the same disk and directory structure as the old server. If they are different, before you open the database for normal use, you will have to do some "alter database rename [old_file] to [new_file];" commands, to set the new file paths in the control file(s) correctly.

Export/Import way is running savely and it is proven method.
Because these are different OS I think this is the way you have to go.
