Question

SELECT .... WHERE CHAR=VARCHAR ???

I am trying to execute this query:

select customer.address, people.age from customer,people where customer.name = people.id;

This should normally cause no problem, but in my case customer.name is from type VARCHAR2(30) and people.id is CHAR(30). This results in now row selected, although there is a match. Is there a possibility to cast CHAR into VARCHAR (like TO_CHAR, but this only converts Date or number)? I am not able to change my table definition because one of them is a system table.

I would think it would be due to spaces in the CHAR(30) field. Try changing the query to:

select c.address, p.age
from customer c,people p
where rtrim(c.name) = rtrim(p.id);

The previous solution works if there are only spaces to the right.  To remove spaces from the left you would need to use LTRIM along with RTRIM.  Of course if you are working on 8.1.6 and higher you could simply use TRIM which would remove spaces from the left and right.
