Question

Oracle 9i Lite database size growing

Asked by: oraelbis

The database size on Oracle 9i Lite is increased.
If I extract data and recreate database with them, volume can be reduced at 5-10 of time.
Whether there are any other ways of reduction of the size? Some tools, or may be internal Java classes.

Please give us some more information.  When you say "The database size on Oracle 9i Lite is increased", what are you comparing it to?  Do you mean compared to Oracle8i Lite?  Do you mean compared to an earlier version of Oracle9i Lite?  Or do you mean it has grown over time while you used it, and is now larger than it was when you installed it?  That is exactly what I expect to happen as a database is used.

I mean mydb.odb data file size, when I’m using it. For example this file grows to 60 MB. When I create script, which recreate all metadata and data, after database recreation db file size reduced to 10Mb. And data access performance increases for 10 or more percent (It is my subjective estimation).
If you have experience with Interbase, then you may know, that it is possible to create backup database copy with garbage collection using IbConsole or other tool. After restoring this backup, data file size reduced.
But I prefer Oracle Lite and I would like to have some tools for database maintenance like IbConsole.

I am not familiar with Interbase.  In Oracle databases that are being used, it is typical for the size of database files to grow over time (at least if the tablespaces are set to auto-extend, which may be the default).  If they are not set to autoextend, they will not expand, but then you will get "out-of-space" errors in Oracle sooner or later as you add records.

If you re-create the database, the datafiles will be back to their original size but then you have lost all changes that have been made.

Do you expect to be able to add records to an Oracle database and not have it ever expand?  There is usually some free space initially after creating a database, and you likely can add records up to a point without the datafiles expanding, but sooner or later they have to expand if you continue to add data, right?

I know all this, but Oracle Lite is different from Oracle 8i or 9i databases family.
This database for mobile clients without db instance and listeners, only odbc or jdbc connection.
I'm using odbc via Delphi with minimal Oracle Lite configuration(2Mb).
And Oracle Lite not support tablespaces and tables storage  settings such as pctfree, pctused ..

I'm sorry, I've never used or seen Oracle Lite.  I made the mistake of assuming it was like the enterprise version of Oracle (at least in how it used space), but with a restricted set of features.

Hopefully someone with some Oracle Lite experience will give you some help.
