Reinstalled the JRE.
Just tried the 201 version of the installer against the 9.2 cd... No Go!
Says the 2.2 installer is required.

Browse All TopicsI'm stumped... I just tried to install 9i release 2 on my laptop.
When I click on setup.exe, the cd spins for a while then I get an error window.
Title bar say 'Java Virtual Machine Launcher'. Text says 'Could not find main class. Program will end.'
My laptop had 901 installed on it, and I thought there may be a conflict. So I uninstalled 901, deleted the oracle registry entries, and removed oracle from the path. Clean machine, right? Rebooted and tried the 9.2 cd again. Same Error.
I thought my laptop was the problem, so I tested with the 901 cd. Installed the 901 client... I assume that's the 2.1 Universal Installer. Installed fine. Configured it and everything worked as expected.
Next, I installed the 131 JRE. No Help...
Then, I removed it and all java from the machine.
Now the 2.1 installer, says it needs jre 117 or higher(i can fix this),
but 2.2 installer, still gets the launcher could not find main class.
Got any ideas?
I've searched Metalink and found some hits, but mostly to do with Jserver and Applications, not the Universal Installer.
I've also used the cd to install 9.2 on other machines, so the cd is not corupt...

Got It!...
We recently had to change network ids (to remove national chars).
The desktop group used some black box software to not have to change the profile
to a new directory. All most everything worked, except the 2.2 Oracle installer.
Remember 2.0.1 still worked.
So the solution in this case was:
Started with a clean machine per doc 124353.1
Still getting main class error.
In the 'Documents and Settings' directory,
rename old profile directory to useridOLD.
Create new directory by signing off and signing back on.
This should create a new profile directory.
At this point the 2.2 installer would start! yee Ha...
Still need to copy over select items from useridold profile to userid profile.
Many Thanks...

the problem is with the universal installer, i've seen something similar to this before, it's a real pain...... try cleaning up the classpath as well; then reinstall jre then update the classpath to reflect new jre dir. or try leaving the 9.0 universal installer version installed and use it to install the 9.2 software. i've seen that work before as well.
good luck,
