The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. Slowdown on upgrade 8.1.6.0 to 8.1.6.3

Hi,

System: Oracle 8.1.6.3 on a Tru64 Unix server.

Generally our production database has experienced a sharp slowdown after this upgrade (which was required in order for a Reports 6i patch). The problem happened exactly the day after we upgraded the server.

Specifically, all SELECTS on a particular table (TRESPROPERTY, 1.4M rows, 766Mb, 76 extents) are much slower than they used to be (users used to get response times <5 secs, now can take 3 to 10 minutes). No IUD is being done on this table which is a warehouse-like table, updated nightly. Some of them are full table scans, others use indexes; all have the same big slowdown.

We've tried making sure no other processes are running, but the SQL still just hangs. TOAD "DML Processes" shows the SQL execution running 99.92% complete immediately, then takes 3 to 10 minutes to complete. Even if only one user is currently executing a query, it still "hangs" for at least 3 minutes.

CPU usage is <20%. DBA reports no problems he can see using Patrol. Tables are fully and recently analyzed, stats are almost identical to reality.

No points will be awarded for the following suggestions:
1. "Analyze your tables"
2. "Rollback to 8.1.6.0 and see what happens".
