Question

Oracle 9iDS forms newbie, never ever built in form before, have no book, confused, :)

Asked by: heskyttberg

Hi!

I'm a forms newbie, never before used RAD tools, usually use notepad to build PL/SQL, html, php, c/c++ and so on...

I'm just abit confused what my formsbuilder are doing.
I use Oracle 9iR2 and Oracle 9iDSR2.

When I try to add a button to a tab canvas I get 10 'push button xx' where xx is a number, i figured out how to change the text.
But why do I get 10 buttons ?
If I run the application only top button is clickable, if I resize the whole field I get 10 small buttons.

This happens allthough I draw the size of the button, this happens in layout mode, am I just plain stupid or is there something wrong, have I missed anything ?

Regards
/Hasse

I think that you ought to change Number of Records Displayed block property. Maybe it is 10 ... (I use Forms 6i).

Hi!

Yes, it's 10 as standard for tables and such, but why does this affect buttons and everything else ?
Where can I find this standard setting ?

There is no such setting for the button property.

Only for text fields and such.

Hasse,

If you only require the one record in the block then Henka's reply is perfectly correct for 9i as well as 6i. If, on the other hand, you require those 10 records for your other fields then the following may help.

If you have 10 records displayed in your block (block property "Number Of Records Displayed" = 10) but only require one instance of your button yet 10 each of your other fields then you can eiither:

1) Set item property "Number Of Records Displayed" = 1 but keep block property "Number Of Records Displayed" = 10
Or
2) Create a new block with "Number Of Records Displayed" = 1 and use that as the container for your button.

I hope that helps.

Hi!

I'm going to accept  chedgey's answer cause this led me on the right track.

I had to change the property for the button:
Number of items to display to 1.

This number defaults to 0, which is just plain stupid, why would I want to show multiple copies of same button, since only one will be active at compile time.
Anyone doing more forms development, might be able to explain this, though I can't see why.

I have another small question, I understand the thing with showing items, I can't create a new "block".
I can create a new frame, and in that frame say how many items I want to display inside that frame, but how do I connect a button object into a specific frame is at all possible.

Hasse,

The default for "Number Of Items Displayed" is 0 which is interpreted as "Display the same number as is specified for the Block" and is the most sensible setting as I have found this to be the required value for over 99% of items displayed on forms that I have written - well in excess of 1,000 over the past 16 years working with Oracle. I would argue most vigorously that this is not "just plain stupid" but the correct behaviour as it is so infrequently overriden from default.

It is merely a product of your form design that you wish to have one button visible on a block with 10 records displayed but it is just as common to have an instance of the button for each record, i.e. 10 records = 10 buttons. Oracle had to decide upon a default behaviour for such items and the most sensible course of action was to have each item in the block (whether text item, button, list item, etc...) inherit basic settings from the block defaults yet allow override at individual item level if required.

One does not create a new block graphically in the Layout Editor. To create a new block got to the Object Navigator, Right-click "Data Blocks" and choose "Data Block Wizard". Alternatively hightlight the Data Blocks item on the object tree and then hit the green "+" to create a new block manually.

To include the button item within your new frame can you not just drag the button into the frame on the Layout Editor?

Regards

Hi!

Aha, thanks!

Yes, I tried to create a new block, but I wasn't able to do this since a block needs the procedure/function to return something.
My procedure was just parsing a few tables genrating data in another table, so the wizard dosen't work for a procedure like that.

Hey, I'm learning fast, I have no problems with complex views or PL/SQL code.

I agree to it can be of use to create one button for each filed for something.
But the thing here was that I only got 1 button, but it shows up 10 times, You can't split them to get them to do diffrent things, and only one will be clickable.
It's that I don't see any point in, I would see the use to automatically get ten individual buttons created for me, I might have gotten all this wrong but this is how it behaved when I ran the form.

I'll keep struggling, thanks for the link, I've been searching the net without finding anything useful.
I think I'll go buy a reference book or something next week, :), It's hard to gues and do trial and error.
