2.5  million rows in a table

Hi,
We have one table in  database which has 2.5 million records in the database.And this table needs to be updated by another table.
The following  is the update statement i gave
update ( select a1, b1 from a, b where a.id = b.id )
    set a1 = b1.
a is a big table  and b is a small table.
How to make this update faster?This didn't worked even after running for three hours .
