How to authenticate Oracle users through web application?

I'm in the process of creating a ColdFusion MX Application Framework to authenticate Oracle database users.  
We are currently running Oracle 7.3 but will be upgrading to Oracle 9.  However, I'm new to this.  

We have thousands of users and multiple roles already assigned.  I'd like to take advantage of what is already done and not reinvent the wheel by creating a new table to query.

I've been reading up on OID and was wondering if this is necessary or if there is another way that I can verify Oracle username and password from dba_users in login process? Also, is it true that Oracle Internet Directory (OID) is only available after Oracle v. 8?

I hope I've explained my situation clearly.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

OID is NOT part of Database option. It's part of Oracle application server.

Authentication is usually done through application server , more specifically, Directory servers Like OID from oracle, iPlanet from netscape, or Active Directory from MS.

you can implement your own auth scheme through web server, but you are already reinventing the wheel.

Just want you know, Upgrading to oracle9i database does not help you to change AUTH scheme.

it's separate issue.
