Slow performance on 600 column table

I have a table that has grown from 200 columns initially to almost 600 columns over the past 2 years since the system went into production. Columns have been added and sometimes dropped whenever a product release occurred every 3-4 months. Performance on the table, even just selecting * from the table has gone down tremendously. And the table is using an enormous 1GB for just 25k records. Lots of the columns are number(1), dates, or varchars less than 20 characters.

Rebuilding the indexes doesn't help. I am suspecting that the performance problems are due to each row being spread across many discontinuous blocks of data. Is there a way to determine if this is so?

I copied the table into a new table and found the new table size at 4Mb a mere 4% of the original table. Performance went up 5-10 fold on basic data retrieval. Much improvement on the complex queries too that use the indexes and i repointed to this test table.

I am looking for a way to get the same type performance improvement from the existing table without dropping and recreating the table. Lots of dependencies, contraints, and hassles to do that.

1. Is there a way to fix this performance problem without copying, dropping and remaking the table.

2. If not, is there guidance to keep in mind while doing this?
