Question

oracle connection problems

Asked by: qfren

Hi:

i had a connection code in aps.net c# to oracle as follow:

connection = new OracleConnection(strConnection);

// Create a OracleCommand and prepare it for execution
cmd = new OracleCommand();

PrepareOracleCommand(cmd, connection, commandType, strCmdText, strParameters, dsRequest );

all the thing above work fine for me wihtout error.

Currently it maybe happen where the oracle server hang or restart cause the client keep waiting reponse from server.Well it didn effect my application in my situation.
Now for tracing purpose i wan to add new thing to detect the response from the connection:

So in the coding above, is that possible to edit so that let say in certain time if the connection from client  failed to connecti oracle server( connection can not be completed within the certain period),it will return some value so that my coding can catch it?

Something like,

intResponse=//connection to oracle server

Thanks.

I think there is a thing in Vb called connection.open or sort of thaat. you can verify from that. if you want the exact code then i think you will have to post a link of this question in Programming Language/.net section of EE.

You can trap practically any Oracle error in .Net.  I'm still not clear on the specific requirements that you are looking for.  Just wanted to add that there are some C# examples posted on OTN that should be able to get you started.

>> ok..which part u not understand?

What specific errors you wish to trap and when.  I haven't seen a .Net application hang when the DB is having issues.  If the DB is down, then a TNS error is returned pretty quick.  You might see what the timeout is for a connection wait.  Also, are you using ODP.Net?  If not, you should serisouly look into using it.  It is really the only supported .Net data provider for Oracle.

>>what is OTN?

otn.oracle.com

It is the resource center for Oracle.  It has all the documentation/software/sample code/??? for all Oracle products.  For some of it you will need to register but the registration is free.

Not sure how to code around this on the client side.  There may be some smoke and mirrors that will allow you to cancel a function call but that would probably best be answered in one of the .Net forums.

All that said:  You can control how long the connection attempt waits in the listener.ora file on the DB server.  The text for the error message in the docs tell you how to do this.  I believe this would be the easiest method.

TNS-12535 TNS:operation timed out

Cause: The requested connection could not be completed within the timeout period specified by the CONNECT_TIMEOUT parameter in LISTENER.ORA. This error arises from the TNSLSNR.

Action: Either reconfigure CONNECT_TIMEOUT to be 0, which means wait indefinitely, or reconfigure CONNECT_TIMEOUT to be some higher value. Or, if the timeout is unacceptably long, turn on tracing for further information.
