The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Rotating data with Oracle views

Asked by Halibut in Oracle Database

Hi folks,

anyone got a clue how I could solve this one???

I have a table in oracle 10 like this:

user   att_name  att_value   updated
doug  age           36            16/10/2001
doug  extn          2134         18/01/2002
doug  user_id     tts447        16/10/2001
fred   age           18             16/02/2001
fred   extn          2289          26/10/2003
fred   user_id     tts301        16/11/2001
fred   reg           j409ssr      06/10/2001
john  age           22             16/12/2000
john  extn          2345          11/10/2001

It gets one row, for eace 'user' for each 'att_name' attribute. So doug gets three rows, one for age, one for extn and one for user_id.

Now I nead to gather this data together, and swing it round in a view (possibly using other sub-views) to make it much more useable. So I need to get something like this:

user    age  extn    user_id   reg
doug   36    2134   tts447
fred    18    2289   tts301     j409ssr
john    22   2345

(I'm not remotely interested in the updated column)

Therefore, I need to collect the various records together, and populate one column for each of the attributes.

Now, some conditions:
1. Each user has a variable number of attributes. So, not all of the columns in the view will be populated for each record.
2. If possible, I'd like to know how to create these column names in the view 'on the fly'. The system is open, so I have no control over what any of the att_name's will be. So I need the view to be able to create columns based on the various names that are in the att_name column.

Has anyone got a clue how to approach this? I'm stumped.

Cheers,

Hal.
