The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Can't Access a Ref Cursor Column

Asked by dvcom in Oracle Database

Tags: ref

Hi,

I am generating a report in ASP.NET.  For this purpose, i created a stored procedure that returns a reference cursor to ASP.NET page and then ASP.NET page assign that reference cursor to a data reader and this data reader is then assigned to a grid. Now the problem is that when the data amount is huge, the ASP.NET page returns the errors either "Object Reference is not set to an Instance" or "Invalid Operation: Data reader is closed". Now, i have thought a solution that i don't want to return a ref cursor to ASP.NET page, i want that when the cursor is populated with data at database end, then i want to create a text file via UTL file package on the server from that ref cursor and then my ASP.NET page will download that file.
The problem is that i can't access ref cursor columns. I want a generic function, that just gets a cursor (no matter how many columns the cursor has) and UTL file process starts and create a text file from the ref cursor.

I know how to access a row of cursor. i.e.

FETCH MyCursor INTO a, b;

but by this way, i am bound to ref cursor columns.
Is there any way like we do in a matrix.......i.e.

FOR i=0 to MaxRowsOfCursor-1
FOR j=0 to MaxColsOfCursor-1
   UTL_FILE.PUT(pFile, MyCursor(i)(j));
NEXT j
NEXT i
