Question

oracle cloning on 9i not going according to plan.

Asked by: arpoodle

I'm cloning a database, from one server to another, and changing SID in the process.

From the source, I performed an "alter database backup controlfile to trace" and have modified the script accordingly, to take into account new data filenames and paths,
I've copied all the datafiles across, and have renamed them accordingly.

I have run
bash-2.05$ SQLPLUS /nolog
sqlplus> connect system/manager as sysdba
sqlplus> startup nomount

and have then run the controlfile creation script created from the source.

the script doesn't terminate, and seems to hang.

in disk01/oradata/live1/ctrl/ a control file is created.
however, no controlfile is created in the respective disk03, or disk04 directories as exist in the source.

the database has a number of large datafiles, containing BLOBs, the largest single datafile is 32gb.

if I run tkprof on the trace file, I can see that is executes the script, but it doesn't give me any info on what's happening.

for a LARGE set of datafiles, how long shoud the controlfile creation take? am i just being impatient, or should the script terminate quickly, and I've got another problem.

thanks

andrew

here's the output from SQLPLus, it's been like that for over an hour now, with no output:

Posting the script would be useful...
Did you shutdown the source DB before copying datafiles ? If the answer is no, then recovery is necessary, what may be *very* long with a large set of large datafiles.
In addition, did you copy and modify your pfile ?

Crossed posts... Script looks fine, what about other questions ?

by: arpoodlePosted on 2006-03-08 at 02:58:54ID: 16131712

source database was shutdown for copy.

I copied an modified the inidSTAGE1.ora to the destination, renaming it as initlive1.ora in the process.  I also checked the other .ora files in the pfile directory had the relevant paths corrected.

with the largest datafile sitting at 32gb, how long should the controlfile creation script take to execute?

by: ploubierPosted on 2006-03-08 at 03:12:09ID: 16131762

You have to 'alter database open;' before 'alter tablespace temp'.

by: arpoodlePosted on 2006-03-08 at 03:15:11ID: 16131774

it's not even getting as far as the "alter tablespace temp" however.  it's sitting, with no output returned after the CHARACTER SET UTF8;

I'll bear that in mind for when the script gets to that step.

by: arpoodlePosted on 2006-03-08 at 03:38:37ID: 16131886

I can see it is creating a controlfile in /disk01/oradata/live1/ctrl/, but it dosn't seem to create respective control files in disk03 and disk04 as found in the source db.

by: ploubierPosted on 2006-03-08 at 04:46:57ID: 16132193

Please post your pfile and have a look at alert.log
While script is running, do you measure significant CPU and drive activity ?

okay,

I've rebooted the box, and started with a clean slate.
and I think this post just about covers all eventualities :|

Nice reading, thanks ;-)
A little precision : in the outputs, we have two instance startups, one after 'startup nomount' and another one after '@stage1_control_script.sql'. Is there a startup command at the beginning of the script ?
In addition, try to add a '/' at the end.

by: arpoodlePosted on 2006-03-09 at 07:20:03ID: 16145298

I have fixed the memory errors, but am back to square one.

first of 3 control file creates, but then nothing else happens. nothing reported in SQLplus, not returned to the SQL> prompt, and nothing further in the alertSID.log, other than showing the script that was run.

What about my last post ?
It seems the ouput doesn't match what the script should produce. Please post stage1_control_script.sql again.

I had issued a startup nomount when it was in the script.  having corrected that error, it makes no difference.

adding the "/" to the end of the script as below returns me to the SQL> prompt with a preceding "49" output.
in this case it doesn't even create the first controlfile.

control file script as below:

Are variables $PATH, $ORACLE_HOME and $ORACLE_SID correctly set ?

by: ploubierPosted on 2006-03-10 at 00:47:14ID: 16152847

Did you copy the password file ?
Please check that you removed any datafiles in temporary or read-only tablespaces from the DATAFILE clause of CREATE CONTROLFILE.

by: arpoodlePosted on 2006-03-10 at 01:13:18ID: 16152951

I have solved the problem.

It turned out the problem was with one of the datafiles being mounted via NFS.  Oracle doesn't like NFS for that.

Thankyou for your help.
