Hi Experts!
I always deployed oracle server running on Linux plataform... But, this week, i deployed my first Win2003Server running oracle... Do i need to manually shutdown oracle instance before turning my server off?
Another question is:
How stable is Oracle running on Windows 2003 plataform?

Shutdown options are defined in the registry. Check it out with Start -> Run -> regedit. Expand the hive :
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWAR
Keys names are :
ORA_<SID>_SHUTDOWN -> must be set to TRUE
ORA_<SID>_SHUTDOWNTYPE -> must be set to i for immediate
You can also set how the Windows service will interact with the instance at startup :
ORA_<SID>_AUTOSTART -> TRUE if you want the instance to startup at Windows boot and you set the service OracleService<SID> startup type to Automatic
According to my experience, Oracle is stable on Windows 2k & 2k3, but it depends on the skills of your sysadmin (maybe yourself). Windows tuning is worth, like Oracle.
Performance is the same problem, check that undesired MS stuff like IIS isn't installed if the server is dedicated to Oracle.
Finally, there will always be a significant difference between these OS : the overhead of Windows GUI if you usually deploy Linux servers without XFree.

the main difference is the Hardware avaiable, ie FAST RAM and FASTEST DISKS and disk controllers, especially having dedicated disk for redo log , data , index, archivelog/backup
it is true that M$ as OS is not the best, ie by default installation it uses more resources itself than a *NIX environment which simply has too many "user-friendly" GUI interface things running (I will NEVER understand why on a M$W Server product the M$ Games like freecell can be installed by default!!!)

you don't need to manually shutdown the oracle server before shutdown.
Oracle is very stable on Windows platform, but it's all a matter of usage.
if you have a dba that likes to play around or refuses to apply patches, you will see also some oracle problems.
