Question

Need help automating script to create user accounts

Asked by: slimjim28

I need to create multiple user accounts for a classroom environment and I would like to modify the following script so that upon execution I would be prompted to enter a user id for the user and the script would then create the user and grant the proper roles and privileges.  This process would then repeat for the next user id I entered.

I thought I could do this with a substitution variable but it isn't working as I expected.

Can someone give me some guidance?

CREATE USER "ABC123" PROFILE "STUDENT" IDENTIFIED BY "*******" DEFAULT TABLESPACE "USERS" TEMPORARY TABLESPACE "TEMP" ACCOUNT UNLOCK
GRANT UNLIMITED TABLESPACE TO "ABC123"
GRANT "CONNECT" TO "ABC123"
GRANT "IST210" TO "ABC123"
GRANT "RESOURCE" TO "ABC123"

I would create a SQL script called "create_user.sql" that looked like this:

CREATE USER "&1" PROFILE STUDENT IDENTIFIED BY ******* DEFAULT TABLESPACE USERS TEMPORARY TABLESPACE TEMP ACCOUNT UNLOCK;
GRANT UNLIMITED TABLESPACE TO "&1";
GRANT "CONNECT" TO "&1";
GRANT "IST210" TO "&1";
GRANT "RESOURCE" TO "&1";

Then create a user by running it:

@create_user TEST

>> upon execution I would be prompted to enter a user id

     you could use the follwing (put them in a script file)
     ////////////
set echo off

ACCEPT username PROMPT "Type in new user name: ";

CREATE USER "&username" PROFILE STUDENT IDENTIFIED BY ******* DEFAULT TABLESPACE USERS TEMPORARY TABLESPACE TEMP ACCOUNT UNLOCK;
GRANT UNLIMITED TABLESPACE TO "&username";
GRANT "CONNECT" TO "&username";
GRANT "IST210" TO "&username";
GRANT "RESOURCE" TO "&username";

PROMPT "new user &username has been created!";

when you execute this script say createuser.sql as
@createuser.sql

it will prompt "Type in new user name: " to let you input new user name.

Both solutions work but actonwang's solution was more on the lines of what I had in mind with one exception - is there a way to make the script loop so the script doesn't have to be run each time I want to create a user?

Ideally, I would be nice to:
1)  Run the script once
2)  Enter in the first user name
3)  Get confirmation that everything has completed properly
4)  Enter in the next username

u can use this sql script,
save as "create.sql"

create user &un
identified by &pwd
default tablespace &tbsp
temporary tablespace &tmp;

grant &role to &un;

grant &role to &un;

save this whole in one file, but make sure that u did "create.sql", otherwise it'll save as text file
then from sqlplus prompt > @create

u can use &&, if u want some thing to be stored for the period of ur session, so u don't need to enter it again & again.

Hope this helps!

by: fouaddbaPosted on 2006-04-25 at 12:00:44ID: 16537056

create user &un
identified by &pwd
default tablespace &tbsp
temporary tablespace &tmp;

u can add to this whatever u want, eg.,

account &stats (lock or unlock, by default account is unlock)
profile &pro  (as default profile assigned automatically)

since sqlplus script itself doesn't include any conditional loop statement, you'd have to use other batch file or program to  implement it.

by: actonwangPosted on 2006-04-25 at 12:09:36ID: 16537164

here is a batch file you might use to implement it:

///batch file createuser.bat
@echo off

set COUNT=%1

if ""%1"" == """" set COUNT=1

for /l %%i in (1,1,%COUNT%) do call :create
goto end

:create
sqlplus <yourusername>/<yourpassword> @createuser.sql
goto :EOF

:end

@echo on

by: actonwangPosted on 2006-04-25 at 12:11:30ID: 16537190

your createuser.sql will something like:

///////////////
whenver oserror exit
set echo off

ACCEPT username PROMPT "Type in new user name: ";

CREATE USER "&username" PROFILE STUDENT IDENTIFIED BY ******* DEFAULT TABLESPACE USERS TEMPORARY TABLESPACE TEMP ACCOUNT UNLOCK;
GRANT UNLIMITED TABLESPACE TO "&username";
GRANT "CONNECT" TO "&username";
GRANT "IST210" TO "&username";
GRANT "RESOURCE" TO "&username";

PROMPT "new user &username has been created!";
exit;

by: actonwangPosted on 2006-04-25 at 12:12:19ID: 16537203

if you want create 12 users, invoke createuser.bat as :

createuser 12

Enjoy :)

Actonwang - the combination of the bat file and your last script does exactly what I want.  Thank you very much for your help!
