The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Always have trouble when creating a new instance on the same server as another running instance

Asked by Damian_Gardner in Oracle Database

Tags: database, oracle

Hello.  I'm setting up a 3rd separate database instance on an HPUX Oracle 9i server, and am having trouble with the create database statement.  I remember from last year, that I ran into similar trouble when setting up a test database in the midst of a production database on the same machine, but somehow I got it to work.  I can't remember what the trick was this time, so now I plan to take massive notes on the entire process!  Anyway - the environment is an HPUX 11 9000 server, running Oracle 9i.  What I'm looking to do is install a 3rd database that will be used as a test pilot for an ERP upgrade we're doing, so it will be entirely separate from any of the other databases, as a brand new SID.  I've created the new init.ora file, and created the staging directories.  The problem I run into is when I log into SQLPLUS and try to start the instance without mounting.  ROSS59 is the new instance.  When I login, this is what I get:

SQL*Plus: Release 9.2.0.6.0 - Production on Wed Jun 14 14:51:49 2006

Copyright (c) 1982, 2002, Oracle Corporation.  All rights reserved.

Connected to an idle instance.

SQL> start ROSS59 nomount;
SP2-0310: unable to open file "ROSS59.sql"

Perhaps it's the unix user that I'm using?

Thanks,
Damian
