Question

pfile

Asked by: Smruti1

Hi
I created a database using dbca. but when I looked at \oracle\admin\stand\pfile.
I am wondering that pfile's name suppose to be initstand.ora but I found some different name like-->
init.ora5272006132248 and type= 5272006132248file.
what does that mean and I am not able to see any parameter regarding log_archive_start or any thing for log%?

Any help would be appreciated

Thank in advance.

by default, it will use spfile, the corresponding pfile is located in:

<oracle home>\database\INIT<SID>.ORA

by: actonwangPosted on 2006-06-29 at 13:31:53ID: 17013261

log in as sys and issue:

create pfile from spfile;

then you will get most updated INIT<SID>.ORA file.

by default, LOG_ARCHIVE_START is FALSE, if you have default value, you will not see it in pfile.

use the following to see the current configure:

show parameter log_archive_start;

Thanks actonwang
I created pfile but I am not able to find its location.

If I have default value for LOG_ARCHIVE_START =false ,how can I change using pfile if I can not see in pfile.

Thanks in advance.

Your init<SID>.ORA file should be under $ORACLE_HOME/database folder.

Oops sorry acton. Missed your comment.

Thanks actonwang.

I checked <oracle home>\database\INIT<SID>.ORA but there I found only spfile which is  init.ora5272006132248  not the pfile I created with this command--create pfile from spfile; and it is  platform-specific default server parameter file.
but when I issued this

SQL> CREATE PFILE='/oracle/admin/standby/pfile/stand_init.ora'
  2         FROM SPFILE='/oracle/admin/standby/pfile/init_spfile';
CREATE PFILE='/oracle/admin/standby/pfile/stand_init.ora'
*
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-27041: unable to open file
OSD-04002: unable to open file
O/S-Error: (OS 2) The system cannot find the file specified.
I got this error message.

As per Part Number A96629-01, I want to configure DG BROKER, I need to perform this task---
Before starting the Oracle instance, add the DG_BROKER_START=TRUE record to the initialization parameter file.
After starting the Oracle instance, set DG_BROKER_START=TRUE using the SQL ALTER SYSTEM statement.

But here if I am not able to see parameters how could be it possible to perform this--
Before starting the Oracle instance, add the DG_BROKER_START=TRUE record to the initialization parameter file.

Thanks in advance.

are you in unix? sorry, try to look for:

<oracle home>\dbs instead.

did you try this?

////////////////
issue:

alter system set log_archive_start=TRUE scope=spfile;

then  restart the server.

The change would be made to spfile.

To create PFILE
use
SQL>create pfile='/u01/init.ora' from SPFILE;

Now you can edit the PFILE.
If you need to see if it is OK try to start the DB from PFILE:

SQL>shutdown immediate
SQL>startup pfile=/u01/init.ora

by: actonwangPosted on 2006-07-06 at 06:36:45ID: 17050467

>>SQL> CREATE PFILE='/oracle/admin/standby/pfile/stand_init.ora'
  2         FROM SPFILE='/oracle/admin/standby/pfile/init_spfile';

you only need to issue:
 CREATE PFILE='/oracle/admin/standby/pfile/stand_init.ora'
           FROM SPFILE;

if you start the instance using spfile.

then make chane to stand_init.ora restart and start up the server by:

startup pfile='/oracle/admin/standby/pfile/stand_init.ora'

you might want to apply those changes to spfile by issue:

create spfile from pfile='/oracle/admin/standby/pfile/stand_init.ora'

if it looks ok.
