I've installed both oracle 9i and 8i on the same server ( window 2003).
Oralce 9i is working fine .. I can connect to it without any problem.
but, when I try to connect to oracle 8i, i keep getting an error: TNs: Adapter error...
I know the Oracle 8i database is there because it worked previously....
I am not sure what i need to do to fix this problem...

Might be some conflicts with the listener.. Ideally it would be appropriate to have 2 listeners running.. One for 9 and other for 8. In case same listener is used, then there are chances of tnsnames not configured properly..
It would be helpful if u can provide the tnsnames and listener entries for the 2 versions..
It will be good to use one listener (that for 9i).
tnsnames.ora should be configured so that it contains all entries.
If you chose to have bopth listeners running you can also use
one common tnsnames setting in the registry TNS_ADMIN
environment entry (in the Oracle home settings).
I think it is complicated task to maintain 2 listeners on one machine.
Definitelly they have to listen on different ports.
The port is mentioned in listener.ora config file.
Here is hte TNSname.ora file. RATEST is for Oracle 9i and QPD1 is for Oracle 8i.

what is the error number for the tns error you are getting?
there are a few tns errors, and the number will determine which course of action to take.
