Question

Oracle Nightmare

Asked by: valekhawke

I wish I could be more specific, but I have a user who is trying to use a web based app called Metrics Manager that is also somehow tied into Oracle. When she tries to do anything in CMM within this app she receives the error message:

"ora-06502:pl\sql:numeric or value error:numberprecisiontolarge ora-06512:@"cmm.upd_kpi_property_secure", line49 ora-06512:@line1"

Like I said, I wish I could be more specific but to say I am AT ALL Familiar with this app would be a lie as it's the first time I ever even heard of it let alone had to try to help troubleshoot it. Hopefully this error message points to some general flaw within Oracle.

Looks like line 49 of the upd_kpi_property_secure procedure/function is incorrect.  Check this module and see what's on line 49 -

robyncoffey,
Thanks so much, unfortunately we do not have direct access to the database as it is a web-based app. Is it possible that something within the OS part of the oracle install could be causing the problem or is this something that is going to have to be checked on the back end directly at the database level?

This error occurs when you try to assign a value to a numeric variable, but the value is larger than the variable can handle.

For example, if upd_kpi_property_secure procedure had the following PLSQL code:

declare
   v_number number(2);
begin
   v_number := 100;
end;

=>
number(3) > number(2)
=> number precision of "100" is  to large

This is something that has to be looked at on the back end at the database level.  Check with your database administrator (DBA).

This problem has been escalated internally because we really don't have the means to check the suggestions that you all have offered. However I'm sure that each of your suggestions would likely have worked and would like to give each of you the full 500 points. How can I do that?

As far as I know you have to split the points between us if you want to share the full 500.
