The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

How to connect to second instance with Oracle Enterprise Manager?

Tags: Oracle, Database, 10g
I have two database instances running on the same machine, one called ORCL and one call ORCLPROD.  When I try to use OEM through a web browser, it always connects to ORCL without giving the option of which instance to connect to.  How do I direct OEM to connect to the ORCLPROD instance?

You need to determine the port number of ORCLPROD instance and specify that in the URL.

In a shell
Set the oracle_sid to ORCLPROD and issue
emctl status dbconsole

This will reveal the port number for this instance.

@rolutola

I get the following error when I try your suggestion:

OC4J Configuration issue. e:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_1/oc4j/j2ee/OC4J_DBConsole_helix.OURDOMAIN.local_ORCLPROD not found.

Do you have an ORCLPROD instance on that box?

If so, then check that you have set the ORACLE_SID correctly first before running the emctl command.

Maybe you didn't confgure database control when the ORCLPROD database was created.
Did you manually create the database or did you use dbca? If you used dbca then you would have had the option to configure database control (the default is to configure it)

Are you on Linux or Windows?

Yes, there is an ORCLPROD instance on that box.  Both ORCL and ORCLPROD are on the same box.  I did verify that ORACLE_SID was set correctly.

I believe the ORCLPROD database was configured manually, but it wasn't done by me so I'm not exactly sure what was done during the configuration.  Is this something that can be done after database creation?

I'm running on Windows Server 2003 Std.

What port do you connect to ORCL on?
Set ORACLE_SID to ORCL and do:
emctl status dbconsole
What do you get?

You can configure Database Control after the database creation. Let's first confirm that there isn't one already.

With ORACLE_SID set to ORCL I get:

Oracle Enterprise Manager 10g Database Control Release 10.2.0.1.0
Copyright (c) 1996, 2005 Oracle Corporation.  All rights reserved.
http://helix.OURDOMAIN.local:1158/em/console/aboutApplication
EM Daemon is not running.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Logs are generated in directory e:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_1/helix.OURDOMAIN.local_ORCL/sysman/log

05.11.2008 at 04:25PM PDT, ID: 21543897
And I can currently connect to ORCL with OEM by going to http://helix.ourdomain.local:1158/em

But I need to be able to use OEM for both ORCL and ORCLPROD.

To configure database control:

1. ensure listener is running
2. have an entry in tnsnames.ora for the instance (test with tnsping <alias>)
3. have the following information available:
    a. the sid name
    b. the listener port
    c. SYS password
    d. DBSNMP password
    e. SYSMAN password
4. run "emca -repos create"
5. run "emca -config dbcontrol db"

You would notice the port number on the last few lines of the output screen.

You may now attempt to connect to the database via database control in your browser.

Have fun.

@rolutola

You instructions seemed to work well.  I can now access manage both databases through OEM.  A couple of final follow-up questions....

1.  Both ORCL and ORCLPROD seem to be using port listener port 1521.  Is it normal for two database instances to be using the same port?  It doesn't seem to have any negative effect that I can see.  Just wondering though.

2.  For OEM, port 1158 is used for ORCL and 5500 for ORCLPROD.  I'm not sure how these numbers got assigned because it certainly did not ask me for them.  Are they randomly assigned during dbcontrol setup?

Thanks!

The listener port is for the listener.
There is only one listener listening on a single port for all your databases on the same box (unless you choose to configure a second listener for some reason). This is normal and there are no negative effects.

There is a database control port for each database. The default port for the first configured database control on linux is 1158. This used to be something like 18100 on windows but I don't know if that is still the case. The second port is 5500 by default and subsequent ports are 5501, 5502... by default.

I hope that's answered your questions. Let me know if there is anything elsenot very clear.

Do following:
1. Check if the Listener is serving the instance ORCLPROD.
%  lsnrctl services
If not - do static registration of the service ORCLPROD by the Listener.
I have posted how many times.

2. Set
ORACLE_SID=ORCLPROD; export ORACLE_SID

3. Start the dbconsole

%emctl start dbconsole

The port your OEM is listening could be find in the file 'portlist'
