I found one solution in an oracle forum saying that I must force the gcc to 32-bit so I did the following: -
$ mv /usr/bin/gcc /usr/bin/gcc.bck
$ vi gcc
#!/bin/sh
gcc. bck -m32
However, I was still getting the errors as seen from log above. I ignored these errors and finished the installation but I have no experience of Oracle and dont know if the database is up and running.
How can I confirm this? I just need to log in to the database and test some SQL queries...
Please help......Thanks!!!

I done the trick before I did the install but its possible that it could not read or execute the script.
I shall restore the original gcc and then run Installer again and post the log.
Thanks.

Could also be missing a PATH variable. Make sure once you switch back that you test from the oracle user prompt: gcc -v
Is your OS Linux 32 or 64 bit? I try to match Oracle bitness to Linux bitness. You can download either version from OTN.

So you are reinstalling now?
Previously you had 32-bit version?
Did you uninstall that prior to installing 64-bit?
Did you follow the installation guide regarding tuning kernel prerequisites?
Install takes a while. How long is "a while" ? :)

I am re-installing with the 64-bit version.
I removed the 32-bit version that I installed previously.
Its been 1 hour and the Installer is still stuck on 17% (copying naeet.o)
I need to get oracle installed asap, this is proving to be a nightmare!
Many thanks for your help and support.

I'm sorry I haven't seen a case where the installer hangs if the OS has been prepared according to the install guide. Did you follow the Linux installation guide and fully prepare the kernel and the os user environment?
ASKER
Yes i followed the instructions.
I did some google research on oracle install hanging at 17% (copying naeet.o)....
This was due to the variable LD_ASSUME_KERNEL not being set.
I get past this issue now but then stumble across some more errors.
'Error in invoking target install_isqlplus of makefile /u01/app/oracle/product/10 .1.0/db_1/ sqlplus/li b/ins_sqlp lus.mk'
When I ignore this, I get:
'Error in invoking target install of makefile /u01/app/oracle/product/10 .1.0/db_1/ rdbms/lib/ ins_rdbms. mk'...
This is very frustrating, please please help me get this installed!!

Ok check to see if make and gcc are installed.
