TNS:connection closed

We are running from jobs at backend.
Yesterday jobs failed and we see following error in logs

failed: ORA-12537: TNS:connection closed (DBD ERROR: OCIServerAttach)

How do we investigate the issue and find root cause of problem?

Describe the jobs, are they remote? How are they schedule? Is the connection to the DB over the network?

If so, is there any sort of firewall?

Yes the connection to DB over the network.
The jobs are scheduled on one of the Apps server. Which tries to connect database and perform operation.
They schedule it using crontab.
I checked the $ORACLE_HOME/network/log and I don't see any error. And I see other users were able to connect database at the same time when job failed.
Because today job is running fine so there is no problem with firewall and it was running before too.

Was there any network problem?
The apps server is on Virtual Machine. I checked on DB side it is working fine.
What should I check on Apps server (oracle client) and network connection? And how can I check that?

If the job was waiting a long time on an operation to complete, the connection may have been considered idle by the firewall and dropped. Does the job run slower at night perhaps due to other jobs running at the same time?

Perhaps there was an intermittent network problem.

You can consider running ping plotter to graph ping history.

Sorry we cannot install pingplotter or any 3rd party software on servers. But I want to check the network was down or there is problem with listener.

Then you could run ping overnight.

C:\>  ping -t hostname > ping.log

The ping log will grow a bit large overnight, but nothing unmanageable, you can check it in the morning for any issues. It will log 3600 pings per hour. So in the morning you'll have 20-30,000 lines and can run a grep or find tool.

Since it won't include the timestamp, you'll have to roughly derive that from the line number, based on when you start the ping. Or write a batch / cmd script just to loop and ping and also echo a timestamp to the log.

Look fot timeouts on the firewall, application servers.
Investigate the SQLNET.ORA for parameter
SQLNET_TIME_EXPIRED parameter
Investigate the default profile of the oracle user
for some parameters like:

alter profile some_profile_name   limit
   connect_time 180000
   sessions_per_user 2
   ldle_time 1800;
