Question

Running a procedure with a return parameter, what syntax for the return parameter ?

I have a procedure that I run like this from within a Pl Sql unit:

edw_util_api.recordApprovals('PRV','130',to_char(sysdate,'yyyy'), 'SYSTEM','Approved per SOP','CDR',vRtnCd)

but I just can't quite get the syntax to run this from a sql plus session, due to the out-return code.

I tried several ways, like this

declare
vRtnCd varchar2(1);
begin
exec edw_util_api.recordApprovals('PRV','130',to_char(sysdate,'yyyy'), 'SYSTEM','Approved per SOP','CDR',vRtnCd);
end;

Normally I run a proc like this in Pl Sql Developer using the test window, and it's all set up and in a slightly different format.

Try this, not sure if I'm remebering the exact syntax.

VARIABLE vRtnCd VARCHAR2(1)

yes, that worked, thanks.

so in Sql * Plus I use "VARIABLE"

but in Pl * Sql it's

You can use the entire block in SQLPLUS omitting EXECUTE and not using bind variable , it should work.

declare
vRtnCd varchar2(1);
begin
edw_util_api.recordApprovals('PRV','130',to_char(sysdate,'yyyy'), 'SYSTEM','Approved per SOP','CDR',vRtnCd);
end:

It because of EXEC...its not needed while called from pl/sql block
