Just date part of sysdate

I want to record just the date part of sysdate in a date field without time, how can I do it? I have a web site and when a users clicks a link, it records username and system default date. However, it is recording date and time in oracle database but i only want date no time.
Can I format  _DATE DATE Default SYSDATE NOT NULL to only record date?
The following is the sql syt I use to create table and field.
create table mytable (
username varchar(255),
_DATE DATE Default SYSDATE NOT NULL
)
i.g
when I look the database it is recording 2009-10-06 22:45:26.0 but I only want 2009-10-06

You need to use TRUNC function like

_DATE DATE Default TRUNC(SYSDATE) NOT NULL

it is still showing "2009-10-18 00:00:00.0". i do not want to see 00:00:00.0.  in oracle database, how do i do that?

you cannot. the data type DATE is date+ time.
to get rid of the time for the "display", you have to use TO_CHAR:

SELECT TO_CHAR(_DATE, 'YYYY-MM-DD')

If you want to store that as a string, then you need to use

_DATE varchar2(10) Default to_char(SYSDATE, 'YYYY-MM-DD') NOT NULL

My earlier comment will store that as DATE datatype storing Date values and making Time values as zero..

I think that you ought to let Oracle stores date as date. You can display it the way you like it: with or without a time part.
