TEST and VALIDATE are for two different purposes.
TEST RECOVERY will apply redo for the datafiles in memory but wont right the blocks back to file.
So it is to make sure recovery will go thru fine without any error during applying redo.
VALIDATE can be used to make sure for the purpose asked in Question.
It will see if backup are restore'able'
