Question

Time from Front End format in oracle

Asked by: loginboy

From Java the input paramter to a procedure is given as TIME.TYPE

so the format is

'Fri May 01 00:00:00 CST 2010'

'DY Mon DD 00:00:00 CST YYYY'

I want to change to either -- DD-MON-YY or MM-DD-YY or any other format where I
will be able to insert into the table.

insert into your_table (your_date) values (to_date(your_time_type_variable,'your_format'))

You can probably use NLS settings at session level in your java code before calling this procedure, In that way you don't have to change parameter settings, but possibly you may have to change hard coded date in you procedure.

Hi sdstuber

Thanks for the reply. this insert is in a pkg.proc so for the date i/p param is given as TIME.types
so it's like this  'Fri May 01 00:00:00 CST 2010'  i will be changing this format and assign it to a local variable and then use that local variable in the INSERT.. Values..() clause

How could I change the format if it's the above format ?? It gives me ORA-01858 error if i do this..

select to_date(''Fri May 01 00:00:00 CST 2010','MM-DD-YY') from dual
OR
select to_date(''Fri May 01 00:00:00 CST 2010','MM-DD-YY') from dual

unfortunately you can't have timezones in your strings when you do to_date.  The "TZR" format mask only applies  for timestamps, not for date types

you will need to split the string into pieces and recombine just the date and time pieces to make a valid string to convert

by: loginboyPosted on 2009-11-04 at 15:52:48ID: 25745467

Ok.

But as of now without changing any format

It's inserting 01-JAN-00 value into the table for that column.

I'm unable to figure out why this date?

by: sdstuberPosted on 2009-11-05 at 04:56:13ID: 25748885

If your starting datestring is 'DY Mon DD 00:00:00 CST YYYY'

then try this...

to_date(substr(datestr,5,7) || substr(datestr,-4),'Mon dd yyyy')

by: HainKurtPosted on 2009-11-06 at 14:55:44ID: 25763795

what about this

select TO_TIMESTAMP_TZ('May 01 00:00:00 CST 2010','Mon DD HH24:MI:SS TZD YYYY')+0  from dual

sdstuber:

It's working but as from java it it's taking this format ..12/06/2009(--MM/DD/YYYY)
will be be able to change the format in oracle if the input param to the proc is DATE type and passed as 10/06/2010?

by: sdstuberPosted on 2009-11-07 at 11:10:11ID: 25767621

if the input param is of type DATE  it does not have a format.  only strings have formats.  DATE type is just DATE

by: loginboyPosted on 2009-11-11 at 16:15:00ID: 25800546

Hi sdstuber,

So , it does not have format? like mon-dd-yyyy  or mm-dd-yyyy or dd-mm-yyyy it should be some format no? please advise. I couldn't get the point 'Date type is just date'

Thanks

think of it like this.  What does "now" look like?  It sounds runny, right?  Because I'm asking you to describe a point in time and points in time don't have a look about them.

A date value is just a point in time.  You can describe "now" by writing it down something like this...  Nov. 11, 2009 9:29 pm but that string of letters, numbers and punctuation isn't "now" it's simply a description of that point in time.

Same with a date value.  The date is a point in time (down to the second resolution)  the point itself doesn't have a format,  only strings used to describe the point have a format.
The date is "only" the date.  Of course there is an internal representation in oracle but it's not a string.  A date column/variable is a set of 7 bytes storing numeric information.

When Oracle is forced to display a value it will create a string to do so,  either one formatted by you or by an implicit TO_CHAR with the default nls_date_format   date mask.
